Formation is “the natural process by which a people’s understandings and ways of life, their world view, and their ethos are transmitted from one generation to another,” according to theologian John Westerhoff in his classic book Will Our Children Have Faith?

And so in recent months your church staff and Education Ministry engaged in evaluation of our programs.  A number of needs had arisen, including responding to some of the ideas generated by the congregation during the Long Range Planning process.  Our discernment process has led to us invite you to join us in a significant expansion of our education programming—we will be launching a weekly Wednesday night for all ages beginning on September 12.

Around 5:30 each week we will join together in a potluck fellowship meal.  At 6:00 we will sing a hymn and pray together before breaking into groups. There will be a children’s program, primarily focused on music and arts.  There will be youth group, exploring our faith-based sexuality education materials this fall. There will be fun activities for toddlers and preschoolers, who will also sometimes join in the music and art with the older kids.  And Scott Jones will lead a Bible study for adults (he’s considering starting with the Book of Judges). Then Sanctuary Choir will practice at 7:00.

We believe that this expansion of programs will help to advance the mission of the church and better meet the needs of our growing membership of young families with kids.  Of course, there’s nothing radical in this idea. Most church and faith communities have weekly Wednesday night programming.

Please join us.  Help where you can–teaching, playing music, cooking, cleaning, setting up.  Or help by being present so that this can become a time of meaningful, intergenerational fellowship and Christian formation.

Peace,

Scott & Katie
