“First Central is so much more than a church. We are here because it is our family, our tribe.” – Sara Sharpe

“Many of you know me as Sara the Office Administrator here at First Central, but I am also a long-time member. I have many First Central stories from over the years, when my church family was there for me in so many ways. I think of the church not as Church, but as family. An extended part of my family. A place where I can find laughter, comfort, and refuge.

My son Jake was diagnosed almost 3 years ago with Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 23. He was told this news over the phone, while he was alone at work. He was terrified. He came down to church to talk to me, and after beginning to work through this crazy information, he found refuge in the sanctuary. A place of refuge for all of my family.

As news of Jake’s illness spread, people from all through the church offered prayers, thoughts, and love to our family. Even some folks I didn’t know well, or at all. My church family was there for all of us. As Jake continued through surgery, chemo, and radiation, our church family was still there. And they were there to celebrate with us when he was declared cancer-free. And they continue to ask about him, still concerned for his well-being.

This is why we are part of this congregation. This is why we pledge to this church. First Central is so much more than a church. We are here because it is our family, our tribe. People with all different points of view. Different beliefs. And everyone taking people just where they are. Not too many places like this exist in the world, at least that I’ve found.

So I ask you to make a financial commitment to First Central. Let’s support this wonderful old building and it’s biggest asset, it’s people. Our tribe. Let’s continue to offer a safe and loving space to all who are looking for it.”
