Scott’s Column: Dark Years? Dec 3, 2024 | Events, News In the late nineties, American philosopher Richard Rorty predicted that in 2016 America would elect a strongman and enter into thirty dark years, but come out the other side with renewed hope and a society that is more charitable and just. Rorty’s prediction returned to public consciousness during the first Trump term, and so Southwestern College professor Jacob Goodson published his book The Dark Years? exploring Rorty’s prediction, particularly what it means for Christian understandings of charity and hope. I first met Jacob when he was a brand new college freshman at Oklahoma Baptist University, enamored of philosophy. He’s gone on to a rich academic career, having published a handful of books. The recent election and the negative emotions it has generated for many people, makes a discussion of Jacob’s book relevant. So, I scheduled him to lead a Zoom discussion for us.
